Keeping Barn areas clean

Keeping Barn areas clean

Hi all,
As winter approaches in this neck of the woods, does anyone have any suggestions on how to keep alpacas from soiling their indoor barn area? Our alpacas have free access to the barn and outdoor pastures/sanded areas. It seems that once one alpaca goes, there is a new dung pile started in the barn. This year I'd like them to "use the facilities" outside! While of course still providing access to a dry space with plenty of clean hay.
Your suggestions would be most appreciated!

I don't know if this would work for you, but we here at meadowsranch, we put carpet on the barn floor. Its used carpet, and I can usually use the same carpet for 2 years. I have been doing this for 4 years now, with great succes. They for some reason, don't potty on the carpet. They have full accses to be in or out. the carpet dose get durty, from the mud, when it rains or snows. but i sweep it out and or vacume it. its amazing how well it cleans up, if you keep it up. By the way, it is a low pile carpet. I have 40 alpacas, this year, so i'll be happy when I see no one potty's on the carpet, this winter. I put it on the concrete floor for the girls, and the boys carpet is on gravel. It all works the same. i put it down usualy the end of oct. and remove it, in the spring, when the snow stops. It also helps to keep them warmer, i'm sure! I have accses to the carpet, through conventions, it's like new, but it is used. hope this might help?
Carolyn
