History
The Maremma is an Italian breed (named after the region where it was developed) and was bred to guard large flocks of sheep from predators.
Uses
Maremma are shepherd dogs, which bond with their flock and protect it. Breeders say they are not herding dogs, as the flock would need to be scared of the dog to achieve this function, which is not the case.
They can be bonded to almost any vulnerable flock animal, sheep, goats, chickens, alpacas. One breeder reported foxes took up to 35% of new lambs before he introduced Maremma to his flock. He has not lost a lamb to predators since. They have even been used to protect flocks of penguins in Phillip Island!
Temperament
The Maremma is said to be aloof, independent and protective of its family and territory. They are very smart, playful and active so companion dogs need to live in a stimulating family environment. They are friendly and loyal to their own family but can be wary of strangers.
This breed is also not recommended for novice dog owners, as they do not submit to humans easily. Most other guard dogs look to their master for orders, but Maremma are independent enough to make their own decisions about everything, including reacting to danger.
Maremma aren't aggressive but are very fierce guard dogs for those they love. The problem is they sometimes guard too obsessively. They must be well socialised and trained from an early age.
The will live happily with other animals, as long as they're the boss. They love cats, dogs, birds, chooks and any other livestock, most commonly cattle, sheep and goats.
Appearance
This is a large, strongly built dog weighing up to 40-50kg. It has a heavy double coat, thick neck ruff and a thickly plumed tail held curled over its back. Their white coat mimics sheep’s wool.
Grooming Double coat, which is both weather resistant and water repellent and can quite happily live outdoors. The long white coat sheds copiously twice a year and at this time needs a thorough brushing, paying particular attention behind the ears and down the back legs. At other times the coat stays remarkably clean and free from tangles.
Ideal owner
Generally this is a working dog used by farmers, and Maremmas sold as pets in cities have not always succeeded. They need at daily exercise. Socialising and basic training is a must- as a breed can be fairly wilful and independent due to their intelligence.
Owners also report once off the leash Maremmas don't always return promptly. Good fencing is a MUST. A Maremma will adopt a large territory if fencing is of poor quality.
Cost: $500-$2000
Lifespan & Health: 10-14 years. Hardy breed with few health issues.
Maremma have a high surrender rate.
Unfortunately some Maremma do not have a happy life or their owners cannot care for them anymore. Maremma are very intelligent dogs and need to have a purpose in life or they become bored and destructive. They are commonly surrendered to rescue shelters because due to their cute fluffy appearance, people think they will be placid like a Golden Retriever but they are very different in temperament and being a working dog, don’t fit into family life as easily.
